In what camera shops should you buy your digital camera?

There are many camera shops where you can buy your new camera. Which one you choose is dependent on where you live.

Where should you buy?

In your local store
The advantages of buying the camera in your local store are of course the possibilities of holding and feeling the camera in your hands. As mentioned earlier the size and weight is two important factors to evaluate.

Disadvantages might be they are slightly more expensive compared to web-shops. It costs having staff in the shop and if the staff is knowledgeable and you get good advices, the extra cost might be worth all the money. Another disadvantage might be the shop only stock a certain brand and thus the assortment is limited. It cost money keeping a good stock. The more specialized your choice of camera is, the more likely it is the shop do not stock it.

Web shops
Buying a digital camera through internet camera shops is very common today and the variety in these shops is very good. You can buy any camera you like. The disadvantage is you can not try the camera before you buy. It might also be more difficult dealing with complaints, as you have to send the camera back to the web shop. In serious web shops this is no problem of course. So make sure you buy your camera in a well renowned web shop.

The advantage of web shops is they normally have a wide selection. If you are looking for something special, it is more likely you will find it there.

Scams and Frauds

Not all people on the internet have honest intentions. If an offer is too good to be true it most likely is. Dealers selling especially brand new models, have no reasons of selling these cameras at big discounts.

The demand is often so high that the manufacturer is not capable of deliver enough cameras to the dealers around the world. Of this reasons big discounts from not reputed web shops is most likely hooked up with some kind of disadvantages (if at all you get what you ordered), so you should think twice

Further these camera shops tend not to accept credit card payments. They often want you to send cash or checks. In such case your money are gone forever if you did not get what you expected.

Is it safe using your credit card on the web?

As long you are buying from well known shop this normally is as safe as using your card in any shop. I personally only use credit card (and not a debit card) when shopping on the internet. With a credit card your money is not taken from your account immediately, but you get an invoice from your card company later. In that way you have time to check everything is as expected before you make the payment.

By using a debit card, you money is transferred from you account immediately after the purchase. If you are scammed your money are “lost” at least until the case is solved by your bank or card company. In any case most credit card companies will cover loss you might have if this is proven to be scam
